Understanding Course Offerings

Department Number, Course Number, Section Number and Semester Hours: Each department is assigned a department number; the course numbering system is outlined below; the section number identifies the number of classes assigned for each course; and the semester hours identifies the number of credit hours available.

Course Numbering System

100-199 Lower division undergraduate courses, primarily for freshmen and sophomores.
200-299 Upper division undergraduate courses, primarily for juniors and seniors. A student normally should have completed at least 45 semester hours before enrolling in a course at this level.
300-399 Advanced undergraduate courses. Open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students. A student normally should have completed at least 75 semester hours before enrolling in a course at this level.
400-499 Graduate courses. Courses at this level are for graduate students. In exceptional instances, a senior may receive permission to enroll for undergraduate credit in a course at this level. Such permission is granted only upon the recommendation of the student’s adviser with agreement of the chairperson of the department offering the course.
500-599 Courses limited to advanced graduate or doctoral students.

Building and Room, Meeting Time, Days: Days are given the first letter of the word with the exception of Thursday, which is indicated by the letter “R”. Meeting time is followed by a “P” if a course meets in the evening. Course meetings of 100 minutes or longer duration are scheduled to include a short break. For example, a three-hour course meeting on Wednesday night, beginning at 7 p.m. is scheduled 7-950P. This would include a 20 minutes break. Whether this schedule is followed or the class meets continually from 7 to 9:30 is the decision of the instructor.

Show Section Detail : Lists information about special requirements or restrictions for enrollment, and material charge or fee, if any, which will be assessed on your bill. If it is not completely understandable, refer to your undergraduate or graduate catalog for further clarification. Also look for special registration procedure messages.
