Academic Policies

Auditing Courses

To audit a course you must first register for that course. Then, download an Auditor Registration Form or pick one up at the Student Service & Referral Center (SSRC), 107 Moulton Hall. The form must be signed by the instructor and returned by the student, with photo ID to the SSRC by the 10th day of class in the semester.  The student may also place a course on audit during advanced registration.

Grade Point Average and Good Standing

To be eligible for graduation or maintain good academic standing, a student must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (C) in all courses taken at Illinois State University for which grades of A, B, C, D, F, or WF are assigned.

Course Load Requirements

Undergraduate: A full-time undergraduate student carries between 12 and 17 hours. For enrollment verification purposes, 12 hours is considered full-time for undergraduate students. A student wishing to carry more than 17 hours in a semester may seek permission to do so from the chairperson or director of his or her major department or school. The granting of this permission will depend on the student’s scholastic record. A freshman may not carry over 17 hours during his or her first semester.
A student considering enrolling in any classes, including extension or correspondence, at another college or university with concurrent registration at Illinois State University should consult with his or her advisor.
Graduate:  Nine (9) to 12 hours is the usual load and 15 hours the maximum load for a graduate student during the fall and spring semesters. In the 12-week summer session the maximum load is 12 semester hours. Students are considered full time if they register for 9 or more hours during the fall and spring semesters and 6 or more hours in the 12-week summer session.  See Graduate Catalog for additional information.

Credit/No Credit (Pass/Fail)

The Credit/No Credit (pass/fail) option allows a student to receive a grade of CT for class performance equivalent to a grade of A or B or C and a grade of NC if class performance is equivalent to a grade of D or F. This option may be elected by undergraduate students during advance registration. The credit/no credit (pass/fail) option may also be elected during the January/August registration and/or program change periods. A student should not sign up for credit/no credit (pass/fail) if they are on academic probation or if the course is fulfilling a requirement in the major, minor, or professional education, or if course prerequisite does not permit the course to be taken for credit/no credit (see course description in catalog). First semester freshmen are not eligible to sign up for the option. A student may not take more than six semester hours on the credit/no credit (pass/fail) option each semester, or have accumulated a maximum of 25 semester hours of CT/NC. Students may add or remove the CT/NC option during the first 10 days of the semester.

Removal of Credit/No Credit (Pass/Fail) Option Deadlines for Summer Session Courses

Students are allowed to withdraw or remove the Credit/No Credit option from a course depending on the duration of the course according to the withdrawal from summer courses schedule. Students must report to the Student Service & Referral Center, 107 Moulton Hall, to officially remove the credit/no credit option.

Constitution Examination

The constitution examination is administered on a number of dates each semester. Students should contact the University Testing Office in Fell 346 or by phone at 438-2100, regarding sign-up, study guides, dates, time, and location. There are a limited number of openings for each date.

Repetition of Courses

If a student completes a course, or drops a course after the tenth day of classes receiving a grade of WX, WP, or WF, he or she may repeat that course once. For students receiving a letter grade of B, C, D, F, or a WF, the course repetition must occur at Illinois State University.

Students seeking to repeat a course a second time must obtain permission from their academic advisor who will submit a substitution waiver form to the University Registrar for final approval. When a course has been repeated at Illinois State University, the most recent grade (A,B,C,D,F,WF) that the student earns will replace the previous grade in the cumulative GPA calculation. A grade of WP or WX will not replace the previous grade.

The previous grade(s) will not be removed from the student's transcript, and the credit hours from only the last attempt can be used toward meeting minimum hourly requirements. Students repeating a course to improve their GPA should be aware that many professional and graduate schools recalculate GPA's to include all courses attempted.

Note:  Students with permission to repeat a course a second time are to obtain a Registration Clearance Permit from their advisor and bring it to the Student Service and Referral Center, Moulton Hall 107 with photo I.D.
