Teacher Certification

Beginning with the spring of 2004, applications for an Illinois Teaching Certificate are processed electronically via the Illinois State Board of Education’s website. After:

  • your student teaching is finished,
  • all other graduation requirements [including applying for graduation] are completed, and
  • final grades have been turned in.

Evaluation Services will conduct a final audit of your academic record, post your degree, notify the ISBE that you have completed your entitlement program, and send YOU a letter (PDF 16KB) explaining how to apply for your Illinois Teaching Certificate via ECS through the ISBE website. Even if you are not planning to teach in Illinois or in the immediate future, you need to complete the application process within three [3] years of your graduation. Delaying the application process can result in additional requirements, tests, &/or forms in order to be certified. If you cannot use a credit card for the application fee or have special circumstances [i. e. foreign birthplace, resident alien status, over three [3] since you graduated from Illinois State, etc.], you will need to:

  • complete the paper form available from the ISBE website or your local Regional Office of Education,
  • bring the completed form to Illinois State University Evaluations for authorization [school seal & signatures], and
  • return the completed form, a complete set of all your college transcripts and both state & county fees back to the ROE.
