How do I register for a Departmental Proficiency Examination?

Complete the Departmental Proficiency Examination form. Registration must be submitted by the deadline date specified for the term for which you plan to sit for the exam. Late registration will not be accepted.

What does it cost to take the exam?

There is no charge for these exams.

When is the deadline for registration?

The registration deadline date is mid-July for fall exams and mid-November for spring exams. For specifc dates, please contact the Student Service & Referral Center at (309) 438-2188. Late registration will not be accepted.

Will I receive confirmation of my registration for the exam?

Confirmation of your registration for the exam will be e-mailed to the address provided.

How many exams may I take?

You may register for only one exam per term. You must meet exam requirements in order to take the exam.

What are the requirements to qualify for the exam?

  1. You must be a currently attending or be admitted to Illinois State University for the semester in which you wish to take the exam.

  2. Some departments/schools require a written examination and a project or performance examination.

  3. You may take a proficiency examination only once.

  4. Additional restrictions may apply and can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.

When will the exam be administered?

Exams are administered at 1:00pm on the Friday before classes begin in the Fall and Spring semesters. Report to the room listed after the name of the department in which you are taking the examination.
