Double Majors and Simultaneous Degrees

Double Majors
Undergraduate students completing requirements for two majors (Double Majors) concurrently are eligible to receive only one degree unless 150 or more hours have been completed and a Simultaneous Degree Application is submitted and approved.

The degree awarded is based on the degree corresponding to the primary major. All requirements for the degree type (e.g., B.A. or B.S.) corresponding to the primary major must be completed. All additional requirements associated with the primary major must also be completed (e.g., majors in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) must complete the CAS World Languages requirement).

One diploma is issued to the student upon completion of both majors and all other degree requirements. Both majors are designated on the transcript at the time the degree is awarded. Majors are not printed on the diploma.

Simultaneous Degrees
A student may submit the Simultaneous Degree Application by the applicable graduation deadline and, if approved, receive two bachelor's degrees in the same term if they have earned a minimum of 150 undergraduate credit hours and satisfied all requirements for both degrees (e.g. a B.A. and a B.S.), majors, and sequences. The majors may be the same if two different sequences are completed. The degrees may be the same (e.g., two B.A. degrees) or different (a B.A. degree and a B.S. degree). All specified graduation and major requirements for both degrees must be met:

  • Total Hours: students completing more than one degree simultaneously must earn a minimum of 150 hours.
  • If either degree is a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), the B.A. Foreign Language Requirement must be met.
  • If either degree is a B.S., the Bachelor of Science - Science, Mathematics and Technology (BS-SMT) Graduation Requirement must be met.
  • If either degree is for a major in the College of Arts and Sciences, the CAS World Language Requirement must be met.
  • General Education/Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI): students only complete general education requirements (for the program they are following) one time, no matter how many degrees they are completing simultaneously.
  • AMALI: students only complete one AMALI course, no matter how many degrees they are completing simultaneously.
  • IDEAS: students only complete one IDEAS course, no matter how many degrees they are completing simultaneously.
  • Senior College Hours: students are required to complete 40 Senior College Hours, no matter how many degrees they are completing simultaneously.
